Wikis - Like this web - are websites many people can use to edit and collaboaratively develope a text. One of the nice functions of Wikis is that each version is saved, so it is very easy to monitor changes to the text, who changed it, when and even why! If one does not agree with the changes it ist very easy to revert to the older version or change it all together.

Probably the best known Wiki is the Free online Encyclopedia:Wikipedia, where thousands of users log on each day to monitor, and develop pages on areas of interest or expertese.

Google offers its users a service to create, edit and save the most common documents computerusers create (word processing documents, spread sheets and presentations) Users can invite others to edit the documents with them.

Das Vermischen von Inhaten (mashup)

Auf vielen Internetseiten sind Inhalte, die man mit anderen Inhalten vermischen kann um sie wertvoller zu machen. Zum Beispiel kann man Immobilien-Informationen mit geografischen zu vermischen. Damit z.B. auf einer Karte alle Immobilien in einem vom Benutzer eingegebenen geographischem Beriech zu sehen sind die bestimmen Vorgaben entsprechen.

The presenters:
The Swedish presenter, Seth Norberg, is ICT-Coordinator at Tensta Gymnasium. Seth will present analysis and examples of how methods and results change where ICT is used to further develop pedagogics.

The Islandic presenter, Hróbjartur Árnason, is lecturer at Iceland University of Education. Hróbjartur will discuss how we can use Wikis to help learners to collaborate on learning projects online. What systems, methods and teacher activities encourage – or discourage learners to write their own content, share ideas, and manipulate the text of their co-learners? What do learners think of the learning experience? Examples from university courses and in-company Wikis.

The Danish presenter, Anne Fox, is Educational project consultant and teacher at CV2, Grenaa Handelsskole. Anne will tell about “A Day in the Life of an English Teacher”, where she uses several Web 2.0 tools. Further she will discuss how to transfer the good experiences to others.

The Finish presenter, Timo Väliharju, is Chief Executive at Mediamaisteri Group. Timo will present his experiences with open source software, open source tools, e-portfolio, blog and wiki in teaching

The Norwegian presenters, Jon Hoem and Grete Oline Hole are members of The Norwegian Networked University’s Professional group of dialog tools. They will present experiences with Web 2.0 tools in teaching in several institutions - and draw some visions for the next couple of years.

Abstract

Anne Fox, an English teacher, describes how she has used various Web 2.0 tools in language teaching. The tools include:
  • RSS aggregators to know when new material has been added to favorite blogs, podcasts, news pages and so on.
  • Podcasts to encourage students to exercise oral skills
  • Blogs to enable students to discuss topics with outsiders.
  • Audio and text chat to enable students to discuss topics with external guests live.
  • Distance role play involving email accounts, sound files and mobile phone messaging.

She introduces the VITAE project which aims to pilot train the trainer courses to integrate such tools in everyday teaching.

Web 2.O is a term that has been used in the last few years to express what some people experience as a fundamental change to how the Web works and is used. Technologies in web-programming have made it easier for people to cooperate, share information and desseminate materials.

Some think that this technology will in turn change the way we do business! (See for example"Wikinomics" (and: Wikinomics.com, Wikinomics Wiki; Business Week Article)

For us this new technology is interesting as it brings new possibilities to learning.
It will be interesting to study how these technologies will effect learning in the workplace, and in other places where adults gather to learn. We will need to ask our selves:
  • What competences will our adult-educators need in order to use Web 2.0 tools to benefit the learners?
  • How can we support the usefull use of these technologies in adult education?
  • Will adult learning get any better with the use of these tools?

How to improve the communication in the area between the
learner/applicant and the company? E-portfolio might be a good tool of communication. But companies/employers seem to prefer screening and testing when they have to appoint somebody. There is need of dialogue between universities/schools and companies to find a good way of communication to ensure optimal appointments and a good way of bridging school and work life.

The conference LEARNING IN THE WORKPLACE was arranged by the Danish Association for Flexible Learning (FLUID), The Norwegian Association for Distance and Flexible Education (NADE), The Swedish Association for Flexible Education (SVERD), STUS, Nordisk Netværk for Voksnes Læring (NVL), The Swedish Agency for Flexible Learning (CFL), the Nordflex project and the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Development, and it is taking place in Copenhagen the 23. – 24. May 2007.
The purpose of the conference was to facilitate knowledge exchange and knowledge sharing between the participants from the Nordic countries.
The conference programme has three horisontal themes: Mobile learning; with examples from M-Learning projects and partners; Learning Objects; with discussions and presentations from both an academic and a practical perspective, and Learning for Business; with representatives and cases from a wide range of companies
Furthermore the conference applied a variety of work methods: presentations, workshops, hands-on, Special Interest Groups etc
In addition to the actual Learning in the Workplace conference, which is opened after lunch on the 23 May the conference committee has arranged a pre- conference taking place in the morning of the 23 May, and a post-conference, which will commence when the official conference ends, at lunch the 24 May.

In recent years companies have been turning more and more to in-house specialists to train their employees, rather than calling in external experts. In this presentation we will consider reasons for tapping into local knowledge to support workplace learning and methods to tap inside knowledge, and support creation of new knowledge out of collaboration in the learning process.

Hróbjartur shared with us his experience of how companies have been turning more and more to in-house specialists to train their employees, rather than calling in external experts. By leading us through an inspiring Mind Map he presented his considerations on the possible reasons for tapping into local knowledge. Further how it is possible to enhance workplace learning and methods to tap inside knowledge. He discussed different methods that can be applied in the creation of new knowledge out of collaborative learning processes.
